Layout – Guidelines

O.k., I don't want to tell orders or to bear down your expression - these guidelines shall help the people who put the final file together, which is sent to the printery. Remember: This won't be the point to discuss – their needs rule!

If you don't layout your articles:

Text can be used in every well-established format: MS Word (.doc), OpenOffice (.odt), RichText (.rtf) or just as pure text (.txt). We use OpenOffice, so we are able to read any of these files.

If you put in pictures:

Of course you can suggest places for accompanying pictures in these files – this will help us to find a place for the attending file, but we will work in InDesign, where pictures are treaten otherwise. So add the pictures separately, as extra files.

Pictures:

Pictures should be in the Tagged Image File Format (.tiff or .tif), which should be handable for every image-processor. Don't use .jpeg, .png. - or gif-format, as it is used in the internet. If it ain't possible to avoid .jpeg (e.g. digital cameras): Send them in in the highest resoltion & highest quality available; we are able to put them into a correct file format. If you can use an image-processor, please put them into this format: 300 dpi, grayscale, .tiff-format, lzw-compression !

If you do layout your articles:

Actually we are using Adobe InDesign CS3 and CS4; so we can read these files. We can not read Quark-XPress-files in a proper way, nor can we read scribus-files anyway. Please leave us alone with any Word-files (.doc) or similar products – it is more work to make them handsome, than retype them...

InDesign-files should not be a problem, but the fonts you use can cause some. We decided to use „HVD Poster“ as headline- and „Arial“ as text-font. „HVD Poster“ is available at www.fontsquirrel.com, „Arial“ is called „Helvetica“ e.g. in Macintosh-systems. „Times“ and „Times New Roman“ can be used for alternating text, they won't be a problem, if you need to divide the character style. If you need any other font to be included, please contact the layout-staff before!!!

If you are obsessed by a special font – feel free to make an image out of your headline! Image-processors like Photoshop can generate images out of text. Images (see above for requirements) can be used instead of an (text-)headline.

If a page is not filled...

There is no problem for us to fill half pages with an ad! But you shold tell this. If we arranged e.g. 3 pages for an article, but it is only 2 ½ or 3 ½ pages – no problem, but tell it, or have a look at the ad-region in the Queesch-Wiki for something, which fits your wishes. There are everytime pseudo-ads from friends, which need a place.

Alternative providing

There is also the possibility to send in articles in the .pdf-format. If you do so, be aware about the limitations of this format (printable pictures, fonts...) Could be a trial worth, but ask. .jpeg-files do not fulfill the printery's wishes.

How to put stuff online:

There will be an article about the wiki soon...
